THE OEKO-TEX® CERTIFICATION SYSTEM

The German, Swiss and Austrian textile research institutes founded the OEKO-TEX® organization in 1992 so that its certificates guarantee products that are harmless to health, environmentally friendly and fairly produced and thus enable responsible decision making in the for all participants in the textile value chain and for consumers. These voluntary marks provide important business opportunities for manufacturers and traders: they distinguish themselves in the market with certification issued by an independent institute.

The standard is a strict, international safety standard for the processing and distribution chain of textile products. The international organization that creates the system of certification requirements sets as a minimum the commitment to the requirements defined in the legislation or the guarantee of stricter limit values as a mandatory goal. During the certification process, the amount of compounds prohibited and regulated by law, known and harmful chemicals, and other health-related parameters are examined. The international organization updates the standard every year, taking into account new chemicals that are harmful to health that appear in production, and determines the threshold values according to their risks. The basic requirement is to comply with the strict own criteria system, so if the manufacturer or distributor has joined the given system, it must be fully complied with.
